What Is an AI Agent? How Does It Work?

What Is an AI Agent?

AI Agents are becoming one of the most important concepts in modern Artificial Intelligence.

But what exactly is an AI Agent, and how is it different from a traditional chatbot?

What Is an AI Agent?

An AI Agent is an intelligent system that can understand a goal, make decisions, use external tools, and take actions to accomplish a task with minimal human intervention.

A traditional chatbot mainly responds to questions.

An AI Agent can understand, plan, act, and evaluate.

How Does an AI Agent Work?

A typical AI Agent follows several steps:

1. Understand the Goal

The agent first understands what the user wants to accomplish.

2. Plan

It determines what steps are required to achieve the goal.

3. Use Tools

The agent can interact with external tools such as:

• APIs

• Databases

• Web search

• Email systems

• Software applications

4. Take Action

It performs the required actions using those tools.

5. Evaluate the Result

The agent checks the result and may adjust its approach if necessary.

Real-World Example

Imagine you ask an AI:

"Find the best flight from Dhaka to Singapore and send the details to my email."

A normal chatbot may simply provide flight information.

An AI Agent could:

• Search available flights

• Compare prices

• Select the best option based on your criteria

• Prepare the flight details

• Send the information through an email API

It doesn't just answer the question—it can take actions to accomplish the goal.

AI Agent vs Chatbot

Chatbot:

• Mainly responds to questions

• Conversation-focused

• Usually reactive

AI Agent:

• Works toward a goal

• Can plan multiple steps

• Uses external tools

• Takes actions

• Can handle complex workflows

Interview Tip

A common misconception is:

"An AI Agent is just an LLM."

That's incorrect.

An LLM provides language understanding and reasoning capabilities, while an AI Agent combines an LLM with tools, instructions, memory or state, and an execution loop to accomplish tasks.

Key Takeaway

An LLM can generate a response. An AI Agent can use that intelligence to perform actions and complete tasks.

This ability to reason, plan, use tools, and act is what makes AI Agents an important part of modern Agentic AI systems.
