Chapter 2 · From Prompt to Context Engineering
Context Quality, Budgets, and Reproducibility
- Page 4 of 22
- 21 min read
A context that fits the budget can still be bad: a passage with no source, a superseded policy beside the current one, the same paragraph twice, a user who pastes a whole book, or a Bangla word stored in two byte forms. This page adds code and tests for these cases. It builds on the ContextBuilder, Budget, manifest and fallback from Context Assembly and Trust Boundaries, which are not taught again.
What you will learn
- How to keep source metadata on evidence, and chat state apart from facts in the documents.
- How to resolve or report conflicting sources, and remove duplicate passages.
- How to limit what a user controls, and build separate contexts for answering and summarising.
- How to test Bangla, English and mixed text, and log decisions without private text.
- How to compare context strategies offline, and build an answer function with a safe fallback.
The new module
All new code is one file that imports context.py, embeddings.py and llm.py and changes none of them. QualityBuilder subclasses ContextBuilder and overrides only select and build. The sections below run each part; the 15 tests are in tests/test_context_quality.py, which comes with the tutorial kit and is not repeated here.

Evidence with no origin cannot be checked, cited or corrected. source_info reads document id, title, section, location and version from the Passage (Embeddings and Similarity), and manifest_with_sources adds it to every evidence row. The model sees only the source id; the metadata serves tests, logs and citations (location is the passage id here; add a path or URL in a real system).

}Separate conversation state from durable data
Chat history is a short, untrusted, disposable memory, not a database: an old answer can be wrong, and the policy may have changed. SessionState keeps a session id, a language, the last document id and the latest turns; save writes ids and a count, never turn text. Facts are looked up again with current_facts.
state = cq.SessionState("s-42")
state.add("How long do I have to return a new bike?", "You have 14 days.", doc_id="kc-returns-v3") # an old, wrong answer
print("chat says :", state.turns[-1].content)
print("corpus says:", cq.current_facts(search, state.topic_doc)[0].text[:60])
saved = state.save()
print("saved :", saved)chat says : You have 14 days.
corpus says: You can return a new, unridden bike within 30 days of delive
saved : {"lang": "en", "session_id": "s-42", "topic_doc": "kc-returns-v3", "turn_count": 2}The chat says 14 days; the corpus says 30. Persist ids and settings, drop turn text at the end of the session, and never copy a fact from a chat into storage.
Handle conflicting sources and detect duplicates
resolve_conflicts applies a written policy: within one document family, language and section, a current passage beats a superseded one, then the higher version wins. It never hides a conflict: each dropped passage becomes a Conflict with a reason. If two passages tie but disagree, or a translation is older than the newest version, both stay and resolved is False, for a human to decide.
from dataclasses import replace
returns = [p for p in search.passages.values() if p.doc_id.startswith("kc-returns")]

for c in cq.resolve_conflicts([search.passages["kc-returns-v3#s1"], old_bn, twin])[1]:
print(("resolved " if c.resolved else "UNRESOLVED"), c.kept, "<-", c.other, "|", c.reason)resolved kc-returns-v3#s1 <- kc-returns-v2#s1 | kc-returns-v2#s1 is superseded v2; kept v3
resolved kc-returns-v3#s3 <- kc-returns-v2#s2 | kc-returns-v2#s2 is superseded v2; kept v3
UNRESOLVED kc-returns-v3#s1 <- kc-returns-v3#s9 | same status and version, different text
UNRESOLVED kc-returns-v3-bn#s1 <- kc-returns-v3-bn#s1 | bn copy is v2, newest is v3The superseded policy (14 days) loses to the current one (30 days) and is reported. The Bangla copy is the same version in another language, so it is no conflict until it is made older. A duplicate is different: the same words twice. drop_duplicates keeps the first passage of each pair whose word sets overlap above a threshold, QualityBuilder.select records excluded: duplicate of …, and input_size measures the effect with estimate_tokens:
from evidencedesk.context import ContextPart, UNTRUSTED
faq = replace(search.passages["kc-returns-v3#s1"], id="kc-faq#s1", title="FAQ copy")
parts = [ContextPart(f"e{i}", "evidence", UNTRUSTED, f"{p.title} / {p.heading}: {p.text}", p.id)
for i, p in enumerate([search.passages["kc-returns-v3#s1"], faq, search.passages["kc-returns-v3#s3"]], 1)]
kept, dropped = cq.drop_duplicates(parts)
print("overlap :", round(cq.overlap(parts[0].text, parts[1].text), 2), round(cq.overlap(parts[0].text, parts[2].text), 2))
print("dropped :", dropped)
print("estimate :", cq.input_size(parts), "->", cq.input_size(kept), "tokens")overlap : 0.87 0.15
dropped : [('kc-faq#s1', 'kc-returns-v3#s1')]
estimate : 204 -> 128 tokensThe copy shares 87 percent of the words, so it goes, and the estimate falls from 204 to 128 tokens. Contradictions are not duplicates: the old and new bike-return passages share only 42 percent of their words, so only resolve_conflicts sees that problem (Medium exercise).
Limit user-controlled context growth
A user controls the question, the history they send and (through a broad query) the evidence. Limits caps each. check_input returns a Checked with a stable code and a safe message; QualityBuilder passes max_evidence to the base builder. Lengths count characters after NFC, so Bangla is not penalised for its bytes.
from evidencedesk.llm import Message
turns = [Message("user", "hi")] * 9
for q, h in [(" ", ()), ("x" * 301, ()), ("Can I return a helmet?", turns), ("Can I return a helmet?", [Message("user", "y" * 2001)]),

history_too_long
history_too_big
ok
raised: question_too_longA rejection is a result, not a crash and not silent truncation. Trimming suits your own state; for history sent by the client, rejecting makes abuse visible.
Use task-specific context templates
qa_context searches for evidence and ends with the user's question. summary_context has no search and no question: trusted rules say what to produce, and the document's sections go in order until the room runs out.
qa = cq.qa_context(builder, "How long does standard delivery take?")
sm = cq.summary_context(search, "kc-shipping-v1")
for name, b in (("qa", qa), ("summary", sm)):
print(name, [p.kind for p in b.parts], "input", b.manifest()["budget"]["input_estimate"], "of", b.budget.total - b.budget.output)
print(sm.request.messages[0].content.splitlines()[0])
print([d.reason for d in cq.summary_context(search, "kc-shipping-v1", Budget(total=190, output=100)).decisions])qa ['instructions', 'evidence', 'question'] input 120 of 300
summary ['instructions', 'evidence', 'evidence', 'evidence'] input 186 of 280
You summarise one Kestrel Cycles help-centre document in at most three short bullet points.
['excluded: needs 49 tokens, 48 left', 'chosen', 'excluded: needs 49 tokens, 2 left']The summary has no question part, and a tight budget drops sections with a reason; a summary of half a document must say so.
Test multilingual context
The pipeline must keep Bangla, English and mixed text unchanged and treat two spellings of one word as one. Unicode can store য় as one code point (U+09DF) or as য plus a nukta sign (U+09BC). normalize_text converts to NFC, and QualityBuilder.build applies it to question and history. text_report counts letters per script and sizes, and checks that text survives UTF-8 and JSON.
one, two = "দেও\u09df\u09be", "দেও\u09af\u09bc\u09be" # the word দেওয়া: য় as one code point, or য plus a nukta sign
print(one, two, "| lengths:", len(one), len(two), "| equal:", one == two)

{'bn': 0, 'latin': 179, 'other': 0, 'chars': 230, 'utf8_bytes': 230, 'est_tokens': 58, 'survives': True}
{'bn': 101, 'latin': 0, 'other': 0, 'chars': 198, 'utf8_bytes': 526, 'est_tokens': 50, 'survives': True}
{'bn': 4, 'latin': 16, 'other': 0, 'chars': 29, 'utf8_bytes': 45, 'est_tokens': 8, 'survives': True}
['kc-returns-v3-bn#s1', 'kc-returns-v3-bn#s2'] TrueThe two spellings differ in length (5 and 6) and are equal only after NFC. The Bangla passage has 198 characters but 526 bytes, against 230 and 230 for English. estimate_tokens counts characters, so it rates the Bangla passage cheaper (50 against 58), blind to the extra bytes. Tokenizers differ per model: measure with yours before trusting a Bangla budget. The Bangla question found the Bangla policy, whose text reached the request unchanged.
Make context assembly observable
log_line writes one JSON line: outcome, source count and ids, history turns, estimated input, room, and counts of decision reasons with numbers replaced by N. It takes no question, history or passage text; extra fields pass through redact (emails, number runs, key-like strings).
import textwrap
question = "My email is nadia@example.com. How long do I have to return a new bike?"
built = builder.build(question)
line = cq.log_line(built, "answered", note="card 4111 1111 1111 1111 used by nadia@example.com")
print(textwrap.fill(line, 100, break_on_hyphens=False)) # wrapped only for the page

[email]", "outcome": "answered", "reasons": {"chosen: score N, status current, N tokens": 1,
"excluded: score below N": 4, "excluded: status is superseded": 1}, "room": 220, "source_ids":
["kc-returns-v3#s1"], "sources": 1}
question text in log: FalseThe question is not in the line, and the card number and email in the note were replaced. Redaction by pattern is a safety net; the default is to log no text.
Provider note (as of 2026-10-12): providers keep what you send. One documents deleting API inputs and outputs within 30 days, with exceptions such as zero-data-retention agreements; another documents keeping abuse-monitoring logs up to 30 days by default. Your logs are a second copy. Check the current documentation.

compare builds each context for every case and counts passes, fallbacks and unrecorded contexts. RecordedAnswers is a fake client like FakeClient, keyed by question and document set because every strategy changes the request text.

one-passage 4/4 passed fallbacks=1 mean_input=112
strict-floor 2/4 passed fallbacks=3 mean_input=82
small-budget 1/4 passed fallbacks=4 mean_input=70These answers were written by hand, so the result shows the test method (fixed cases, same scoring, a number per strategy), not how a real model behaves; real models are less predictable, which is why you test. Redo it with recorded real outputs before you choose.
One passage passes the same cases with a smaller input (112 against 124); a strict floor loses two answerable questions; a small budget answers only the question that needs no evidence. Four cases cannot choose a setting; the point is the method.
Mini-lab: Evidence-Aware Answer Builder
answer_with_evidence checks the input, builds the context, collects conflicts, calls the model only when evidence exists, and returns a Reply: a model answer, a fallback or a rejection, with sources and a safe log line.

Where this shows up at work
When a support assistant gives an outdated answer, someone asks which passages it got, and from which version. Source metadata, conflict reports and a safe log line answer that in minutes, and a table like the one above is how a team judges a change before it ships.
Common mistakes
- Using chat history as storage. It goes stale. Store ids and settings; look facts up again.
- Hiding a conflict. Picking one source silently makes the next bug unexplainable. Report every conflict.
- Treating a duplicate filter as a conflict filter. Contradictory passages share few words. Use both tools.
- Logging raw prompts for debugging. They hold customer text. Log counts, ids and reasons.
Try it yourself
- Easy. Revisit Context Assembly and Trust Boundaries. Set
max_question_charsto 40 and check a 41-character question and a 40-character Bangla question. Which is rejected, and why does the byte count not matter? - Medium. Look ahead to Embeddings and Similarity, which explains
Passage. Compute theoverlapof the old and new bike-return passages. Woulddrop_duplicatesremove one? Which function handles the pair? - Hard. Write a test that builds contexts for two questions that contain secret words (one Bangla) and asserts that none is in the log line.

21 passedEasy: the 41-character question is rejected; the Bangla one passes because length counts characters (it is 120 bytes). Medium: the overlap is 0.42, below 0.8, so both stay; resolve_conflicts reports the pair. Hard: the log holds counts, ids and reason templates only.
Pass checklist:
- All 21 tests pass (15 kit, 3 lab, 3 exercises), with no model and no network.
- The Hard test uses a Bangla secret as well as a Latin one.
Summary
- Keep document id, title, section and location on every piece of evidence, and show them in the manifest.
- Chat state is small and disposable; facts are looked up from the documents each time.
- Resolve conflicts by a written policy and report them; remove duplicates, which is a different problem.
- Limit question, history and evidence with clear rejection codes; use one template per task.
- Normalise Unicode, test Bangla and mixed text, and log counts, ids and reasons, never raw user text.
- Compare strategies on fixed cases; hand-recorded answers test the method, not a model.
